Monarch Preschool for Autistic Children

Intensive intervention with individualized instruction, in a supportive environment that fosters meaningful communication and primary school readiness.

Location

Monarch Preschool is located in Shaker Heights, Ohio, at JDN Early Childhood Center. JDN offers preschool programs for neurotypically developing children, which foster academic readiness, confidence, self-control, creativity, and a love of learning.

Students

Halloween 2009Monarch Preschool accepts children ages 3-6 (younger than 3 considered upon evaluation), with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Monarch Model

Monarch's Preschool program, which combines concept-driven language instruction with visual supports, complements the treatment method (e.g., ABA, TEACCH, Floor Time, Pivotal Response Training, Early Start Denver Model) that's most appropriate for each child.

One-on-One Attention

Each child receives one-on-one instruction and intensive therapeutic intervention from a team of specialists including special education teachers, teacher assistants, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, a music therapist, and an art teacher.

Curriculum

Classes are taught in a natural environment and address social and play skill development, language-based communication, executive functioning, pre-academic skills, activities of daily living, IEP goals and objectives, fine and gross motor and imitation skills, sensory intervention, and behavioral support. Student receive:

Integrative Experience

As students at Monarch Preschool master skills that demonstrate readiness, they are evaluated by a Leadership Team from Monarch Preschool, Monarch School and JDN Early Childhood Center, to design an individualized, integrative experience. This entails participating in various actvities wtih neurotypically developing preschoolers at JDN.

Partnering with Families

Monarch Preschool families receive daily communication notes, attend bi-monthly staffings with their children's teachers and therapists, and may opt to receive quarterly home visits. In addition, they are invited to attend family networking and training sessions.

Scheduling Options

We offer two half-day options (morning or afternoon) and a full-day option, Monday through Friday, 11 months a year.

Funding

We are a provider for the Ohio Department of Education’s Autism Scholarship Program.
